The Method
RISE: Relationship Integrated Social-Emotional Learning
A species-agnostic methodology for animal-assisted, social-emotional practice. Developed across seventeen years and 3,500+ trained professionals, all programs, and taught here with dogs.
The Regulating Triangle
The practitioner, the client and the animal are one co-regulating unit.
Hover or tap each point.
The animal is not a prop or a motivational reward: it is an active co-regulator whose honest, immediate responses become the raw material of the session.
The five pillars
What the method actually asks of a practitioner.
- 1
Structure
Predictable session architecture: clear openings, defined roles, firm boundaries.
- 2
Observation
Continuous reading of both client and animal. The animal's behavior is a real-time signal of the client's internal state.
- 3
Feedback
The animal responds honestly and immediately, without judgment.
- 4
Regulation
Practitioner and animal co-regulate first, lowering arousal in the triangle so the client can find their own regulation.
- 5
Integration
What happened with the animal is put into words and carried out of the room, into school, family, and work.
Why social-emotional learning
Social-emotional learning is a mainstream, funded and measured part of what American schools are expected to deliver. The framework they use names five competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making. Every capability in this program is mapped to them.
A graduate who can write a session goal in this language is legible to a principal. One who cannot is heard as offering a pleasant activity.
